Warmer oceans are turning tropical storms into powerful, fast-intensifying hurricanes, wreaking havoc on coastal regions. The energy for hurricanes is drawn from warm ocean waters. As global sea surface temperatures rise due to climate change, hurricanes are becoming more frequent and more destructive. In recent years, meteorologists have observed a worrying trend: storms are intensifying faster than predicted, leaving less time for communities to prepare.
Sea-level rise exacerbates this issue by making storm surges more severe. Coastal cities are already experiencing increased flooding from high tides, and when a hurricane strikes, the results are catastrophic. Scientists predict that as the oceans continue to warm, hurricanes will bring even more rainfall, cause higher winds, and impact areas previously considered low-risk.
