Rising Waters: The Science and Impact of Sea-Level Rise

Coastal cities and islands around the world face an existential threat as sea levels rise. The two primary drivers are melting glaciers and thermal expansion—when water expands as it warms. Over the past century, global sea levels have risen by about 8 inches, but the rate of rise is accelerating.

The consequences are severe. Low-lying areas are experiencing more frequent and intense flooding, which threatens infrastructure, homes, and livelihoods. Saltwater intrusion into freshwater systems is another major concern, impacting agriculture and drinking
water supplies.
