Coral reefs are some of the most diverse ecosystems on Earth, but they are under siege from climate change. Rising sea temperatures cause coral bleaching, a phenomenon where corals expel the symbiotic algae that give them energy and color. Without these algae, corals become vulnerable to starvation and disease.
Bleached reefs have far-reaching consequences. They serve as habitats for thousands of marine species, protect coastlines from erosion, and provide income for millions through fishing and tourism. Yet, more than half of the world’s coral reefs are at risk of being lost by 2050 if current trends continue.
